Dialysis Overview

Dialysis Overview

Dialysis is one of the final choice for patients with kidney disease, especially in kidney failure stage. It can replace the insufficient kidney to remove wastes and fluid out. There are two kinds of dialysis and will suggested by specific conditions:

Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is a way to remove waste products from your blood when your kidneys can no longer do the job adequately.

A cleansing fluid flows through a tube (catheter) into part of your abdomen and filters waste products from your blood. After a prescribed period of time, the fluid with filtered waste products flows out of your abdomen and is discarded.

Peritoneal dialysis differs from hemodialysis, a more commonly used blood-filtering procedure. With peritoneal dialysis, you can give yourself treatments at home, at work or while traveling.

Peritoneal dialysis isn't an option for everyone with kidney failure. You need manual dexterity and the ability to care for yourself at home, or a reliable caregiver.

Hemodialysis

In hemodialysis, a machine filters wastes, salts and fluid from your blood when your kidneys are no longer healthy enough to do this work adequately. Hemodialysis is one way to treat advanced kidney failure and can help you carry on an active life despite failing kidneys.

With hemodialysis, you'll need to:

Follow a strict treatment schedule

Take medications regularly

Make changes in your diet

Hemodialysis is a serious responsibility, but you don't have to shoulder it alone. You'll work closely with your health care team, including a kidney specialist and other professionals with experience managing hemodialysis. You may be able to do hemodialysis at home.
